The Kalutara Bodhiya

Located at the southern end of the 38m Kalutara Bridge, the three-storey-high Kalutara Bodhiya (Temple) was built in the 1960s, and holds the distinction of being the only stupa (steeple) in the world that is hollow and has access to the inside.

Kanda Vihara Temple – Bentota

The tallest statue of the sitting Buddha in the world, (160ft) can be seen at this famous temple down south, which is known for its healing and calming powers. Devotees from around the country flock here in search of comfort and refuge from the trials of everyday life. The Kshethrarama Pirivena, a vital cog in the sphere of Buddhist education in the country, founded in 1904, is also located within these premises.

Boat Rides Along The Madu Ganga (River Madu Wetlands)

The 915-hectare Madu Ganga estuary is connected by two narrow channels, to the Randombe Lake, forming a complex wetland system encompassing 64 mangrove islets. In the year 2000, International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) undertook a detailed biodiversity survey of the region and revealed the existence of 10 major wetland vegetation types which supports over 300 plant species and 248 species of vertebrates. This remarkable diversity has led to it being classified under the RAMSAR Convention on Wetlands in 2003. If you visit this lush land, you will be able to try out delicious traditional meals with “Kirala” juice (an indigenous mangrove fruit grown along the coast).

Kelaniya Rajamaha Viharaya

The Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara is a Buddhist temple in Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, seven miles from Colombo. The Chief Incumbent (Chief Priest) is Venerable Professor Kollupitiye Mahinda Sangharakkhitha Thera.

The temple has often been associated with the rise and fall of Ceylon / Sri Lanka, with the popular saying that as the Kelaniya temple rose, Sri Lanka rose and as it fell, the country and its administration fell. It has thus had a deep association with the political powers of the country.

Pahiyangala Cave

Pahiyangala Cave is situated in the district of Kalutara, Western Province, Sri Lanka and according to a rural legend, named after an alleged resident during historical times, namely Buddhist monk Faxian (also Fa-Hien, or Fa Hsien). However, there is no archaeological or historical evidence to support this legend.[1] Nonetheless, the site is of archaeological significance as Late Pleistocene human fossilized skeletal remains were discovered in the cave's sediments during excavations in the 1960s, the 1980s and in 2013.

Richmond Castle

Richmond Castle is a Edwardian mansion, located near Kalutara. Built between 1900 and 1910, it was formally the country seat of Mudaliyar Don Arthur de Silva Wijesinghe Siriwardena. The building is currently owned by the Public Trustee and open to the public.
